April 17, 2009 - California Investors embrace Treasury Inflation Protection Securities (TIPS)
What are TIPS?
The U.S. government sells TIPS as a government backed bond which is adjusted for inflation. The principal amount of the bond,
as well as the interest (which is paid twice a year), are adjusted up or down based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Why invest in TIPS?
TIPS can be a great solution for retirement income, and are a great investment for just about anyone.
Inflation or Deflation?
The big debate right now is whether the world will go into inflation (because of the massive amounts of borrowing, spending and
printing money) or deflation (because of the shrinking of the credit system). There's no perfect investment that covers both scenarios, but TIPS
are a good solution. If there is deflation, TIPS retain their value and provide a positive return (only slightly lower than regular Treasury
bonds). If there is inflation, the return on TIPS will be adjusted upward in line with the CPI, a common measure of inflation. To ask a financial
advisor about using TIPS in your portfolio, click on the link above to "Find a Financial Advisor" to search for a planner or investment advisor

January 28, 2009 - How to Find and Work with a Specialized Financial Advisor
Many people end up with a financial advisor because they asked a friend or relative for a referral or they were contacted by a
broker cold-calling. This might be fine for basic, generic financial help, but not for more specialized advice. Your friend or relative's
financial goals and needs are not the same as yours. Most people don't realize that there are planners who specialize in working with business
owners, physicians, teachers, divorced women and many other niches. This is important because you want a professional who has experience with
your specific goals and needs.
You should find a financial planner who has helped other people in your same financial situation. Click the links above on this
page to go to an unbiased search tool to sort a directory of financial planners by various criteria, including location, qualifications, and
specialties.
